Current Volunteer Opportunities

Here are the descriptions of Volunteer Positions that we are currently recruiting for:

Position Title: Build Crew Leader (Volunteer)

Location: Build site within Brantford, Norfolk and Brant counties – interior & exterior work year round

Reports to: Site Supervisor

Commitment: Build shifts – Mondays to Saturdays 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 pm (Mon-Fri) and 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Sat). Crew Leaders are asked to commit to at least 1 shift per week. We encourage Crew Leaders to commit to the entire build cycle, but understand limitations to this.

JOB SUMMARY

Habitat for Humanity Brant is seeking energetic and experienced volunteers to act as Habitat ambassadors and oversee a team of volunteers on a build site. Crew Leaders act as teachers for our volunteers while monitoring the site to ensure that all tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and correctly. As role models, Crew Leaders help the organization keep the build fun, safe, and on time! This opportunity requires strong renovation/repair experience, communication skills, and knowledge of safe operating practices.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coach, inspire and provide direction and supervision to crew members of all skill levels on tasks, safety protocol, tool usage, and appropriate behaviour.
  • Enforce site safety, including the appropriate use of safety gear and proper use of tools, etc.
  • Maintain quality build standards in collaboration with the Site Supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work site at all times ensuring tools and materials are efficiently used and appropriately maintained.

SKILLS, COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Understanding of the Habitat for Humanity mission and the desire to promote it.
  • Ability to lead a small, diverse team of volunteers and provide coaching and positive feedback to volunteers.
  • Ability to understand the work requirements of sub-trades and suppliers.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills with a motivation for working with volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience in carpentry, renovation/repair, skilled trade, journeyman trade, leadership and coaching would be an asset.
  • Solid understanding of the safe use of hand and power tools commonly used in renovation projects.
  • Vulnerable sector police check and references are required.
  • Able to work in a team and take direction from the Site Supervisor
  • Trained in WHMIS, First Aid and CPR would be an asset.
  • Able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs and possess reasonable agility to do the necessary physical labour.
  • Own CSA approved steel toe boots/shoes would be an asset, but can be provided.
  • Attend Safety, Health & Environment Training and Crew Leader Training.
  • Experience in adult learning an asset.

Position Title: Build Hostess (Volunteer)

Location: City of Brantford, Brant and Norfolk County

Reports to:  Site Supervisor

Habitat for Humanity Brant is seeking energetic volunteers to register and train volunteers, along with various other support and administrative tasks on our build site. The build site host/hostess will assist with coordinating and organizing the food services necessary to support the build.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • welcome and guide volunteers through registration and sign-in process
  • provide and ensure volunteers have the required personal protective equipment and assist as required
  • provide new volunteers with a Habitat t-shirt
  • conduct on-site safety training to ensure volunteers understand the hazards associated with the build site and have a safe and fun day
  • assist volunteers with any questions they may have on the build site
  • organize personal protective equipment, volunteer supplies and snacks, and advise of the need for additional supplies
  • assist with pick-up of snack donations would be ideal
  • ensure a neat and safe working environment
  • dress appropriately for weather and wear personal protective equipment (i.e. steel toed boots)
